"Of course We're all issued a leather jacket and two green nomex (nylon) jackets (cold and warm weather versions). Most Aviators festooned each with multiple patches from squadron we are/were in air wings we are/were in missiles we'd shot cruises we'd been on places we'd been. The issued leather jacket was pretty poor quality so many purchased their own from various sources. I bought mine in Korea at Oxford Leather Shop near Osan (pictured here). MUCH better quality plus it had a cool blood chit AND "cheater" pockets you could actually put your hands in on the front vice the issue version with"

"I saw the beginnings of this many years ago in a fairly innocuous circumstance. It was early 2000s maybe 2001-2002 and a Chief tasked a Sailor with some simple field day things (sweep/swab a passageway). Kid took an hour to do a XX minute job because he was on his cell phone constantly. Chief discovered it halfway through and flame-sprayed the Sailor. And this was the infancy of cell phones. Younger people today stare at it for dopamine hits for X or more hours each day"

"Got this one from my Dad a XX year Naval Aviator (6 years prior Enlisted). I was a young man maybe XX and we were driving around on the 32nd Street Naval Base in San Diego. As we drove by some buildings I spotted one that said "Human Resources Management" in big letters on the side of it. I asked him what that was and I remember his reply nearly verbatim. He said that it was "absolute bullshit" and that human beings arent resources and you dont manage them; theyre people and you lead them. That's a sentiment that is central to the notion of "Leadership". It's got many elements (lead from the"

"There are 100s of ways to die up on the roof. The fact that mishaps are rare is a testimony to the training and flawless teamwork executed every day and night not the lack of danger. If you have a chance to see it personally youd be amazed the mishap rate isnt much higher. Its a different operational few get to experience"

"Dont get me started Technology let a Flag Officer into my cockpit via FTI (Fast Tactical Imagery) back in the mid-90s. We could beam our FLIR image back to the ship real time to presumably QA our target selection. That never happened but we did beam back real time BDA. Then someone had the bright idea to put a camera over my shoulder to record everything I was doing in the cockpit. It never happened but had they done it mine would have curiously been inop every time"

"@the_engi_nerd @Aviation_Intel Same. The same DoW/MIC symbiotic relationship that brought us LCS and Zumwalt is still in place; it's baked into the very foundation of our acquisition process. It's about money and profit. Defense of the homeland Hardly"

"Pull quote: "Buried in one of the reports is another concern: that the arrival of readily accessible Wi-Fi onboard ships is reducing crews commitment to professional excellence. (The) incident (was) attributed to poor maintenance and 'eroding of standards' to the point of 'abject failure.'" Anyone that's been part of flight deck ops on an aircraft carrier knows that training professionalism competency and leadership are VERY important to ensure safe operations. But all of those are held together with the singularly important notion of Trust. Everyone in the operational chain (maintainers"

"#TomcatTails Number XX #TomcatTuesday Heroes You Dont Hear About. In the past Ive referenced one of the legendary Tomcat Skippers Herb Wilson. He was the CO of the VF-24 Renegades when I was a Nugget there and one of the best loved warriors in the community. An all-around great dude he never let the pressure from above reach the aircrew and Sailors below him. Easy going yet a demanding professional. His RIO skills were unparalleled in the Air Wing as were his ability to lead from the front and to ensure we fully developed our skills as Fighter crews. He was also quite the Liberty hound so we"

"Interesting story I heard recently in contrast to today's "in your cockpit/fox hole" Flag and General Officers. Here's a quick Wikipedia bio of Fleet Admiral Nimitz: "Chester William Nimitz was a fleet admiral in the United States Navy. He played a major role in the naval history of World War II as Commander in Chief US Pacific Fleet and Commander in Chief Pacific Ocean Areas commanding Allied air land and sea forces during World War II." He was based in Peal Harbor and you know what he did every day at 2pm He played golf. Now how in the HELL can a person with THAT much responsibility play"

"Mini #TomcatTail about dragging things behind the jet. In Fighters we often tow a gunnery banner behind the jet on a cable attached to the tail hook lowering mechanism. It's rather complicated as is the gunnery pattern so I won't dive deep into those. The point of this Tale is what happened after a particular "dragging the rag" mission at Miramar. On one sortie (not my squadron) the banner had been shot off the jet. Doesn't happen often but it happens. Yes that means the guy was shooting pretty far forward. With the banner gone all that remained was the long cable and a X foot long steel pole"
