For ex. at my Baptist church holding to a literal view of the creation account in Genesis is required for membership. But in the Catholic church there are both literalists and those who hold to more mythicist/figurative accounts. And they seem to co-exist without much problem because the church sets the tone. But then take something like the perpetual virginity of Mary. The Catholic church requires this for membership.
