"#OTD in 1914 the German light cruiser SMS Emden arrived at the remote British outpost on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean after sinking several British vessels. Officials on Diego Garcia gave Emden a warm welcome because they were unaware of the state of war between Britain and Germany. "A 1900-year-old gravestone for a Roman sailor recently was discovered in the backyard of a house in New Orleans. Rather than being tantalizing evidence of an ancient Roman naval expedition the gravestone is now known to have been in the collection of an Italian museum until the 1940s. The artifact disappeared after the museum was heavily damaged during WWII. It likely was taken by a serviceman who brought it back to the U.S. to be used as a garden decoration"

"It's National Vodka Day In 1979 USS Sam Houston fired an unarmed practice torpedo near Guam that entered international waters and was promptly scooped up by a Soviet trawler. The Navy chased the trawler for XX hours before diplomatic wrangling between Washington and Moscow resulted in the Soviets agreeing to give up their prize catch. In 1794 British privateers captured French scientist Joseph Dombey who was sailing to the U.S. at the behest of Thomas Jefferson to deliver kilogram and meter standards for the newly developed metric system.
