"Because a strong cedi reduces government revenue from exports it prevents export diversification into manufacturing and value added services also it promotes an import based consumption economy. In the long term this prevents job creation and structural transformation; or otherwise said development stalls"

"Ghanaian politics is funny instead of aligning the exchange rate with industrial policy and export diversification look what they are doing to drive consumption spending. Appreciation depreciation and appreciation again for the purpose of dollar politics. Is anyone thinking how this will affect exporters and planning"

"The key is we need stability; with that said we actually need a weak cedi for exports and diversification not a strong cedi but the key is stability. That is the 17GH everyone quotes was an era of cedi volatility. Therefore it is not immune from the same criticism in terms of it being a hindrance to business planning"

"@psy_rus @Citi973 The only way for a strong cedi not to have these effects is with productivity increases and Ghana has one of the worst productivity growth rates in Africa let alone the world"

"No FDI is actually buying local currency to invest in the country. That causes the local currency to appreciate via the channel of local currency demanded; strictly speaking it is not about FX which is generated via exports and the windfalls from exporting in a foreign currency being swapped for local currency by the central government with the central bank. Whereas FDI currency exchange occurs on external markets"

"Yes all local currency originates from their respective central banks and the networks of commercial banks that hold that currency. But its not a direct relationship of the central bank swapping FX for local currency with the central government as with exports. Not all dollars in the world for example is held by the US central bank or other central banks a some is in circulation in external markets. Similar to the cedi"

"Foreign direct investment (FDI) lowers interest rates and causes the domestic currency to appreciate; if we had a strong productive base worth investing in because we have a relatively cheap local currency that attracts foreign investment we wouldnt have to worry about currency manipulation. However because we are missing the production base here we are. We must start with a low currency to jump start the process via boosting competitiveness to drive export diversification and encourage FDI. Thats why I argue for a weak currency in the short to medium term it ought to be part of an industrial"
