"The rocks tell stories of oceans deserts mountains and swamps that were once here brought into existence then swept away over the vast expanse of time. If this vista allowed you to look directly down on the Colorado River you would be looking at a river almost a mile (1.6 km) below. That is how far down the river has cut through the rock layers over the past five million years. It is still cutting but at a slower rate. Now it is slicing at the extra-hard basement rock. If it werent for the river there would be no Grand Canyon. Its down cutting triggers side-canyon erosion the side streams"

"#InternationalMountainDay and Grand Canyon While Grand Canyon is one of the Earth's most famous canyons (the opposite of a mountain) there are mountains in its rock memories The rock record in the deepest part of the canyon preserves the guts of a grand ANCIENT mountain range The Vishnu Mountains is the name we apply to that now -eroded mountain belt that was once similar to today's Andes (1720 MILLION years ago) then flattened by erosion by 1250 MILLION years ago the time when the region was at sea level and sediments of the Grand Canyon Supergroup were deposited atop the Great Unconformity."
