"a lot of people keep sharing the recent XX year chart of $VOO and $SPY and repeating the line that every X green years we get one red year. that sounds convincing until you zoom out past XX years. once you look at all the data the pattern falls apart. sometimes a red year comes after X green year sometimes after X sometimes it clusters sometimes it skips. there is zero consistent cycle. in the second chart you can see clearly that this X green then X red idea is just pattern chasing on a small sample. the long term data shows no repeatable rhythm at all"
