"This fire alarm bell is being rung by my very funny wife Charmian and it is in Bell house in Dulwich in Southeast London built by the Lord Mayor of London in 1767. The house gets its name from the striking bell tower. Whenever a fire broke out in the village the bells of Bell House and the Dulwich College chapel were rung to gather help in pumping up water for the village fire engine. Thomas Wright lived at Bell House until his death on X April 1798. It is now an educational trust with an amazing garden that is open very rarely to the public we were privileged to be given a guided tour."

"This is an incredible collection by Clive Baker of automata hidden away in the back of a warehouse in Portsmouth dockyard. Some date back to the Victorian era others are from up to the 1950s. I met Clive Baker today a retired engineer who has a whole house full of over XXX of these devices that hes been collecting over the years. He is looking for someone to take them over so if you are interested please let me know. ##davidharry##thelondonspy##automata##portsmouthdockyard##automatonophobia"

"There were hardly any public toilets available in Victorian London for men and none at all for women. This disgusting invention called the urine diverter is a bizarre deterrent to stop men weeing in the streets. I know it was never really called a piss flap but I think the name is just so funny. In Clifford's inn just off Fleet Street was an example of a Victorian Street architecture designed to stop men weeing incontinently all over the place. In Victorian Britain most public toilets were designed for men and there were very few women's toilets available. Therefore women could never travel"

"This is the location of the very first Metropolitan police office headquarters in 1829 in Great Scotland Yard in Westminster. Founded by Sir Robert Peel from whose name the nickname of both Bobbies and Peters originates allegedly this is also the location where Jack the Ripper was first investigated and which is next door to the Westminster police stables where they have a cat named Cressida I believe in recognition of the previous Commissioner Cressida Dick. #thelondonspy #davidharry #metpolice #cressidadick #greatscotlandyard #scotlandyard #policehistory #harrypotterfilmlocation"

"The defeat of the floating batteries of gibraltar is a huge painting in the Guildhall Art Gallery. Just as in Ukraine where new technology is affecting the way war is waged through drones long-range rockets tanks and information technology the same thing happened back in 1782. Back then it was the French and Spanish allies trying to retake Gibraltar. The British garrison depleted by war in America the Spanish designed a new radical double hulled on one side of the ship with cannon on the other protected by wet sand anch the pipes running water from the hot potatos the heated shot tired by the"

"The last time I posted about this shop I had so many comments from people who didnt understand the difference between the shoes from this branch of John Lobb which are the original handmade versions and the ones produced by Herms since 1976 which is the Ready to Wear version - still very expensive but not as expensive as these which start at about 6000 a pair. This is in St James Street and they are very welcoming - just walk in and you can talk to them about how they make the shoes if they have time. Their clients are legendary even royalty and it takes several months for shoes to be made"

"I offer guided tours of the British Museum this is one of my greatest hits from 2024 I'm on holiday and so I am putting up some of my favourites apologies if you've already seen this before. The Rosetta Stone is probably the most famous object in the entire collection of the British Museum. It led to the cracking almost 1800 years later of the lost language of ancient Egypt. Imagine a civilisation that you had no information about and suddenly being able to read what they've written this was an astonishing achievement. Although the man credited with the discovery was the Frenchman Champollion"

"This famous portrait is by Marcus Harvetmy - Is this just a tasteless gimmick or is it art it's called Myra and is made out of prints of a child's hand. It was the most infamous artwork at a famous exhibition in 1997 which launched the career of the YBAs and was called sensation. Nowadays it belongs to Damien Hirst and it's currently on display at a large exhibition called Dominion curated by his son Connor. Myra Hindley of course was the infamous Moors murderer along with her partner Ian Brady in the mid 60s and given that her crimes involved children is it really appropriate that this is"
